What to Expect

Voice over IP (VoIP) uses Internet Protocol (IP) to carry voice as packets over the IP network. It has become an alternative to traditional public switched telephone networks (PSTN).

• This webinar will introduce the VoIP components including
  • CPE Equipment such as ATA and Residential Gateways
  • Network components including Media Gateways, Softswitches
  • Key protocols: SIP and RTP
  • Introduce and compare different voice encoding and compression methods
  • Voice quality and measurement methods
    
• Briefly describe related topics such as
  • Fax over IP: T.38, G.711 Passthrough
  • Firewall: Network Traversal
  • Security: Encryption
• Discuss how PMC-Sierra processor chips and software can be used to implement VoIP solutions

About the Presenter

Jon Ames is with PMC-Sierra's Communication Products Division and is responsible for the MIPs-based mutli-service processor SoC product family which is optimized for VOIP applications. Prior to joining PMC-Sierra, Mr. Ames was a product marketing manager at 3Com responsible for Layer 3 Ethernet Switches.

Webinar Requirements

• Computer with:
  • Microsoft Windows Operating System (NT/95/98/2000) (UNIX and Macintosh Systems not supported). Microsoft XP professional is supported; however, XP-Home is not currently supported.
  • Internet Explorer 4.0+ or Netscape 4.0+ (Netscape 6.0+ not supported)
  • RealPlayer (version 6 or later, except for version 6.0.9.380) or Windows Media Player (6.4 or later)
• At least a 28.8Kbps connection to the Internet
• Turn off pop-up blockers
• Firewall settings enabled
