Overview

The QuadPHY RT (PM8385) Evaluation Kit (PM2393-KIT) allows evaluation of the retiming and repeating capabilities of the PM8385 QuadPHY RT. All four channels of the QuadPHY RT are accessible through SMA connectors (some on the main board and other via adaptor cards). This kit may be used in conjunction with external test equipment. The built-in data generator and checker of the QuadPHY RT may also be used. A TCL based GUI provides access to all hardware functions and status information via a USB connection. QuadPHY RT EVALUATION CARD The evaluation card is controlled via a USB micro-controller which is used to control the QuadPHY RT configuration pins and provide register access to the QuadPHY RT device. Several predefined scripts in the TCL GUI can be used to configure the QuadPHY RT for Fibre Channel or Gigabit Ethernet retiming modes as well as the repeating mode. All channels of the device are accessible through SMA connectors. The evaluation card connects to a Windows based laptop or desktop computer via a USB connection. The board may be powered using a 5V DC bench power supply or with an standard PC ATX power supply. The approximate dimensions of the evaluation card are 20 cm by 20 cm. BACKPLANE ADAPTER CARD A backplane adaptor card is included with the kit. This adaptor card has 10", 15" and 20" backplane lengths which pass through a FCI connector. The inputs and outputs to the adaptor card are through SMA connectors.

  • Direct low-level read/write access to the QuadPHY RT via the GUI.
  • Status and mode indicators for the QuadPHY RT.

NOTE:

The following items are required for operation of the kit and must be supplied by the user:

  • Personal computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP / XP Pro with an available USB Port
  • Length matched SMA cable pairs for connecting the SMA connectors to a backplane or oscilloscope

The following items (user to supply) are optional for operation of the kit:

  • High-speed oscilloscope for performing eye diagram measurements.
  • Jitter analyzer (such as Wavecrest or Jit3) for analysis of jitter components.
