Overview

The QuadSMX 3G Evaluation System with SATA Connectors (PM2390-KIT) allows the signal integrity evaluation and interoperability of the PM8380 QuadSMX 3G with SAS & SATA Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) and SAS & SATA Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) via SATA 1x (SFF-8482) and SATA 4x (SFF-8470) SAS cable connectors or via SMA coaxial connectors. To obtain signal integrity and eye diagram measurements, this kit must be used in conjunction with an external pattern generator, or a SAS/SATA HBA to generate SAS or SATA compliant traffic and external jitter test equipment. When interfacing the QuadSMX 3G to SAS/SATA HDDs, a SAS HBA or testing equipment must be used (not provided in this kit) to generate SATA or SAS compliant traffic. The kit consists of a QuadSMX 3G evaluation card, adapters to convert SFF 8470 4X External SAS connections to SFF 8470 1X connections, and adapters to convert SFF 8470 and SFF 8482 connections to SMA connectors. A windows-based GUI provides access to all hardware functions and status information.

EVALUATION CARD

The evaluation card connects to a Host PC via a USB interface, with power provided from an external power supply. This card contains the PM8380 QuadSMX 3G four channel SAS mux device, a USB micro-controller, clock circuitry, SFF-8482 SATA 1x receptacles, SFF-8470 SATA 4x receptacles, and SMA connectors.

SFF 8470 TO SFF 8482 ADAPTER BOARDS

These adapters each consist of one SFF 8470 connector routed to four SFF 8482 SATA 1x connectors. When SFF 84760 cables are connected to the Host and Port B interface of the evaluation card, these adapters will allow connection to HBAs and Hard Disk Drives via SFF 8482 cables.

SMA ADAPTER BOARDS

These adapters convert SFF 8470 and SFF 8482 connectors to SMA interfaces to allow connection to external test equipment such as oscilloscopes.
