Overview

The OctalPHY 1G (PM8352) Evaluation Kit (PM2375-KIT) allows evaluation of the PM8352 OctalPHY 1G SERDES with SFP MSA compliant Gigabit Ethernet transceivers and enables signal integrity measurements made via SMA coaxial connectors.

The FPGA on the evaluation board can be used to source fixed test patterns (K28.5, K28.7) to the OctalPHY 1G for jitter measurements. The built-in data generator and checker of the OctalPHY 1G may also be used to generate/check traffic. Alternatively an external data generator (BERT) can be used to generate traffic and be looped through the OctalPHY 1G device using a parallel loopback.

A Windows-based GUI provides access to all hardware functions and status information via a USB connection.

Features

HARDWARE FEATURES

  • Two SFP Transceiver sockets, compatible with the SFP MSA.
  • SMA interfaces for clock and serial signals.
  • Tyco Electronics HM-Zd backplane connector.
  • Loopback of 1000Base-X data streams.
  • LED status indicators for the OctalPHY-1G and SFP transceivers.

SOFTWARE FEATURES

The demonstration software supplied with the OctalPHY 1G Evaluation Kit provides a graphical user interface with support for the following major functions:

  • Access to registers in OctalPHY 1G device.
  • Automated user-defined configuration using TCL scripts.
  • Direct low-level read/write access to the OctalPHY 1G via the GUI.
  • Status and mode indicators for the OctalPHY 1G.

PM2375-KIT

The OctalPHY 1G Evaluation Kit contains the following material:
  • Installation CD ROM:
    • Demonstration software installation files
    • Evaluation Kit User Guide
    • Evaluation Kit Design Document
    • Evaluation Kit FPGA VHDL Code
  • OctalPHY 1G Evaluation board set:
    • Evaluation Card
    • Backplane adaptor card
    • USB cable

EVALUATION CARD

The evaluation card connects to a Windows based laptop or desktop computer via a USB connection. The board may be powered using a 5V DC bench power supply or with an standard PC ATX power supply.

The evaluation card contains a Xilinx Virtex-E FPGA which is used to provide fixed test patterns on the transmit parallel interface and to provide both register and pin control of the OctalPHY 1G device. Two channels of the OctalPHY 1G are routed to SMA connectors, two channels are routed to the SFP 1000Base-SX transceives and four channels are routed to the TYCO HM-Zd backplane connector.

The approximate dimensions of the evaluation card are 20 cm by 20 cm.

BACKPLANE ADAPTER CARD

A backplane adaptor card is included with the kit. This adaptor card has 20" and a 40" backplane lengths which pass through a HS3 connector. The inputs and outputs to the adaptor card are through SMA connectors.

NOTE:

The following items are required for operation of the kit and must be supplied by the user
  • Personal computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP / XP Pro with an available USB Port
  • Length matched SMA cable pairs for connecting the SMA connectors to a backplane or oscilloscope
The following items (user to supply) are optional for operation of the kit:
  • High-speed oscilloscope for performing eye diagram measurements.
  • Jitter analyzer (such as Wavecrest or Jit3) for analysis of jitter components.
