ARCHIVED WEBINAR
Automatic Protection Switching (APS) Tutorial

Presented Thursday, February 17, 2005

WHAT TO EXPECT
This webinar will explain the benefits of APS

Present architectures for:
- Linear - 1+1, 1:n, SNCP
- Ring - BLSR, UPSR
- LCAS
Discuss how Design Engineers can implement APS using PMC-Sierra's Message Assisted Protection Switching (MAPS) architecture.

Automatic Protection Switching (APS) is a key service restoration functionality built into the SONET and SDH standards to protect against line failures. This tutorial will review APS as described in the T1.105.01, ITU-T G.841 & ITU-T G.7042/Y.1305 industry standards.

Thursday March 31, 2005 - 11:00 AM Pacific Time

PRESENTER
Jon Ames, Communication Products Division

ABSTRACT
This tutorial shall cover the technical details of VoIP

WHAT TO EXPECT
Voice over IP (VoIP) uses Internet Protocol (IP) to carry voice as packets over the IP network. It has become an alternative to traditional public switched telephone networks (PSTN).

This webinar will introduce the VoIP components including
  - CPE Equipment such as ATA and Residential Gateways
  - Network components including Media Gateways, Softswitches
  - Key protocols: SIP and RTP
  - Introduce and compare different voice encoding and compression methods
  - Voice quality and measurement methods
Briefly describe related topics such as
  - Fax over IP: T.38, G.711 Passthrough
  - Firewall: Network Traversal
  - Security: Encrytion

Discuss how PMC-Sierra processor chips and software can be used to implement VoIP solutions

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Design Engineers, Network Architects, Product Line Managers, Engineering Management and marketing managers of VoIP equipment for public, enterprise and consumer applications

A Tutorial on SONET/SDH Automatic Protection Switching (APS)
Issue 1.
PMC-2050248

The simplest class of mechanism for network survivability in the event of failure on a network element or link is automatic protection switching (APS). APS schemes involve reserving a protection channel (dedicated or shared) with the same capacity as the channel or facility to be protected. This white paper provides an overview of the different types of protection switching available with SONET/SDH networks, focusing on technologies that automatically work at the level of either the SONET (SDH) Line (Multiplex Section) or Path. As readers become familiar with the processing requirements for APS and LCAS service restoration, they will appreciate the enhanced functionality in the PMC-Sierra CHESS III, Arrow, and ADM devices which greatly ease APS implementations.

Application of Message Assisted Protection Switching (MAPS) to APS Architectures
Issue 3.
PMC-2021902

This white paper describes how Message Assisted Protection Switching (MAPS) features built into PMC-Sierra devices can be used to reduce the cost and to speed traffic restoration in known Automatic Protection Switching (APS) architectures.
