1. UPCOMING WEBINAR
Introduction to Ethernet
Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 11:00AM PT/2:00PM ET

Babak Samimi

PRESENTED BY
Babak Samimi, Product Marketing Manager, Communication Products Division, PMC-Sierra

WHAT TO EXPECT
Ethernet is the most widely adopted networking technology in today's global Enterprise LANs. Over the years, Ethernet has been able to reinvent itself and grow from the LAN to the home and the metro networks.

This webinar will:
provide an overview of the basic mechanics of Ethernet networking
discuss its evolution leading to Ethernet's ubiquitous adoption in the home, the enterprise and the metro networks

Join in a live Q&A after.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Design Engineers, Engineering Management and Marketing Managers

This webinar will also be archived for viewers unable to attend the live session.

2. NETWORKING HIGHLIGHTS
Successfully Demonstrating Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH Interoperability For Metro Ethernet Networks

PMC-Sierra announced the completion of extensive interoperability testing of its
PM5329 ARROW 24xFE
and
PM5333 ARROW 8xFE
Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH (EoS) mappers in multi-vendor environments and with Agilent Technologies' OmniBER OTN J7232A 2.5 Gbit/s analyzer. PMC-Sierra's proven interoperability testing for metro Ethernet transport services including Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADM) and Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP) provide design engineers with increased reliability and reduced development costs.

Introducing System Clock Generator Optimized for MIPS-Based Printer and Consumer Applications

PMC-Sierra introduced the CM5470 system clock generator, the latest addition to its family of Advanced Clock Management (CLK™) products. The highly integrated CM5470 device, designed for direct compatibility with
PMC-Sierra's 200 to 900 MHz RM7000™ and RM5200™ MIPS-based™ microprocessor product families, is optimized for MIPS-based printer and consumer applications (see Figures 1 and 2). The CM5470 device provides a single-chip clocking solution to drive all of the components commonly implemented alongside MIPS® processors, including CPU clocks, USB, LAN, PCI, and RAM clocks. PMC-Sierra's industry-leading system clock generator will enable OEMs to accelerate their design process and time-to-market.

3. STORAGE HIGHLIGHTS

Successfully Demonstrating System Level Interoperability at Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Plugfest

At the SAS Plugfest, PMC-Sierra demonstrated system interoperability with multiple SAS controller vendors and SAS and SATA Hard Disk Drive (HDD) vendors including Fujitsu, Hitachi, Maxtor and Seagate. This milestone assures OEMs of an interoperable solution for next-generation SAS servers and server attached storage systems.

FCIA Endorses New Class of Hybrid Fibre Channel Disk Drives

The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) announced that it is endorsing a new class of hybrid disk drives conceived by HP, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Seagate Technology. These hybrid drives combine a Fibre Channel interface with a low-cost-per-gigabyte, high-capacity disk drive mechanism to enable a new class of storage devices costing significantly less per gigabyte than mission-critical Fibre Channel drives.

5. CONTRIBUTED ARTICLES

"Tackling Delay in Today's Global Voice Networks"

Gordon Oliver, Senior System Validation Design Engineer, PMC-Sierra, talks about "Tackling Delay in Today's Global Voice Networks" in the July issue of Internet Telephony.

There are three very important components of voice quality in today's global telecommunications network: clarity, echo, and delay. These attributes must be understood and managed in order to maintain voice quality in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). While many consumers take voice quality for granted even in telephone conversations halfway around the globe, the network has evolved considerably over time to ensure this level of service.
