FTTH Solutions
Overview
Fiber to the Home applications require a combination of high performance, i.e., gigabit per second or higher bandwidth and high bandwidth utilization, as well as low system cost and a small footprint.PMC-Sierra customers are using FTTH devices in a variety of applications with many different types of designs goals and performance characteristics.
Here are some representative Fiber to the Home applications that use PMC-Sierra devices to achieve a cost-effective, high-performance PON solution.

Description |
| Single port ONU | This customer premises FTTH modem is optimized to provide gigabit per second bandwith for users at a very low system cost. The gigabit PAS6201 GE-PON ONU device would be used in this single port ONU because it reduces bill of material costs to just the PAS6201 device, some RAM, Flash ROM and a few external devices. |
| Multiport ONU | This customer premises FTTH modem design contains the PAS6201 ONU, RAM, Flash ROM, a four-port Fast Ethernet Switch with RJ-45 connections and two to four standard RJ-11 phone connections. The PAS6201 GE-PON ONU device integrates easily with a low-cost external multiport Fast Ethernet switch and provides enough bandwidth for both standard telephone service and high-speed Internet links. |
| Residential Gateway | A residential gateway provides gigabit and higher FTTH links for both high-speed Internet links and services such as HD TV and standard telephony service. It delivers multiple services and connects to five to eight users with equipment such as multiple PCs and televisions and supports up to four standard telephone lines. |
| Business Gateway | A business gateway provides up to 24 ports of Fast Ethernet connections and a T1 phone line. The PAS6201 is optimized for this application because of the resulting low cost of the bill of materials, the high performance internal ARM9 processor with its separate industry standard operating system and support for customized application software. In this application, a PAS6201 ONU device is combined with a standard CEP T1 phone line interface and a 24-port Fast Ethernet switch device. |
| VDSL Gateway | Where there is a need to provide VDSL service, a VDSL gateway can be designed using the PAS6201 ONU device, some external RAM, Flash ROM and a VDSL switch to connect multiple VDSL users to a gigabit PON network. This results in a cost-effective connection between a PON network and VDSL users. |
